Founded in 2020, Monta is a sustainability tech recharging the electric vehicle revolution. Established with a mission to make EV charging more simple, accessible, and reliable, the Copenhagen-born tech serves drivers, companies, and cities with an integrated software solution that keeps them powered up while providing a more sustainable way to travel.

But what’s powering the EV tech company’s People processes? That’s a question that  Janice Berneman, Head of People and Culture at Monta, wanted to answer when she joined in 2021.

Back when Janice Berneman joined the team, Monta was just a handful of employees. But with a year of hypergrowth and more on the way, Janice knew she had to build the culture and People processes that could scale with the fast-growing company.

Transparency, trust, and connection were key to getting it right.

Building transparency and visibility into People operations

As one of Monta’s earliest joiners, Janice has been building the company’s People and Culture function since almost day one, and embedding core values across the entire employee experience.

Transparency has always been central to this process. For Janice, transparency builds trust, and trust creates a company that people love working for.

“In the early days, we were still defining what our culture meant to us,” Janice says. “We were figuring out how we wanted to show people who we were as an organisation, and how to create a workplace that always made people feel welcome.

“Part of being at Monta is that we all own everything — we’re all part of the journey,” she adds. “Transparency has always been a key part of how we operate. We want everyone to know everything.

“If you say you’re transparent as an organisation, you have to actually be transparent — and when you’re only a few people, it’s much easier to share information.”

“But if you say you’re transparent as an organisation, you have to actually be transparent,” she adds. “From a People perspective, you need to create transparent processes around the employee experience, like career progression and compensation.”

With plans to expand headcount in the coming year, embedding transparency at Monta isn’t just about processes, it’s also about visibility. More specifically, it’s about creating touch points for information to flow across the organisation at scale.

“When I joined Monta, we were only a small team,” says Janice. “When you’re only a few people, it’s easy to share information across different teams. But as we scale, it’s critical for us to build transparency in how we share information and data across the whole organisation. In hypergrowth, teams and departments can often become isolated, leading to information silos.

“As a growing business, it was clear that we needed a HRIS that could centralise our employee data, create a great onboarding experience, and improve visibility and information sharing across the whole organisation.”

Head of People and Culture

Creating automated People processes that build team connection and ownership, from day one

When Janice first started looking for a new HRIS to shape People processes at Monta, her top priority was finding an intuitive system that could keep track of core People data, while still providing a great user experience for everyone. Humaans stood out because of its clean user experience and easy integrations.

“Organisations often buy all-in-one products, but never end up using all the features,” she says. “But when you’re working with different software platforms or tools, connecting them together shouldn’t feel like rocket science. Humaans fit the bill for us, because it provides quick, seamless integrations with our other software platforms.”

Janice also knew that she wanted a product that could actively contribute to Monta’s growing culture, foster team connection, and build a great employee experience — even before day one.

“When people join Monta, we want them to feel welcome from the start,” she says. “We want people to understand what we value, and feel set up to contribute even before the first day. Creating great preboarding and onboarding processes was essential to help our new employees gain insight into us as a company — and us into them.”

“Onboarding a new employee is a complicated process where you’re relying on lots of different people. Being able to automate that whole process in Humaans — that’s perfection.”

Monta’s onboarding setup now includes preboarding access to Humaans for every new joiner, as well as automated workflows to ensure new employees ramp seamlessly.

“Every new joiner fills in their Humaans profile as part of their preboarding process,” Janice explains. “New team members come in on their first day knowing what their team members are like. Existing team members get to know the person that’s joining them before their first day. And that means everything to our new employees — they can really get engaged and excited about what’s coming.

“Onboarding a new employee is a complicated process where you’re relying on lots of different people to complete different tasks at the same time,” Janice adds. “Your entire process is dependent on communicating actions and instructions to lots of different stakeholders across different areas of the business. Do they have a desk? Have we ordered the IT equipment? Has the manager scheduled a two-week check-in?

“Flagging people on tasks creates a lot of manual work. Creating these extra touchpoints smooths the whole experience, and helps everyone create better team connections. Being able to automate that whole process in Humaans — that’s perfection.”

Scaling whole-organisation visibility through People processes and data

“Implementing Humaans means we have all of our essential People data in one place — not just for our People processes, but as a way of building our culture, too,” Janice says.

“Employees join on day one, and they have all the information in front of them. They are familiar with the rest of their team. They understand how we work as a company.

“When we need to report on headcount or our gender pay gap for our investors, I can report on our data and export it directly from Humaans. When we’re hosting an office party, we know where everyone’s allergies are. When we’re onboarding a new employee, everyone stays aligned on what they need to do — from setting up their tech, to their t-shirt size for ordering company merch.”

“Every employee document, essential piece of data, every onboarding workflow action — it’s all in one place. I don’t have to chase people anymore.”

And when it comes to visibility and transparency, implementing Humaans means that Monta has a centralised source of employee data — meaning everyone knows what’s going on.

“Before Humaans, we had folders stuffed full of employee documents and important data. It wasn’t always easy to see who was in the office, or taking PTO.

“But Humaans’ integration with Slack and employee localisation makes it easy to see who’s in, who’s out, and which locations have public holidays coming up — making whole-organisation communication and transparency easy. Every employee document, essential piece of data, every onboarding workflow action — it’s all in one place. Everyone knows exactly what’s happening all the time. I don’t have to chase people anymore.”
